If you are undecided about your next destination or need a spark of imagination, fear not. Google has just released the most searched-for destinations, which set the trend for 2024.
Its ‘Year in Search’ data has just been released, an amazing collective of information that reveals what was searched for this year. The destinations offer what was in the thoughts of online users.
1. Turkey: A veritable treasure trove of ruins, cultures, food, beaches and architecture – plus Istanbul – it hits number 1, having not been made 2023’s top ten list. Cities, such as Izmir and Antalya, and other delights shine through, while its world-renowned hotels aren’t bad either.
2. Greece: Knocked off its number 1 spot, the former top hit of 2023 continues to bedazzle tourists from across the globe. Enchanting islands, quaint villas, and Athens are always calling.
3. Malta: Always a favourite as it harbours wonderful resorts, top-rated restaurants and landmarks, as well as the fact that it has been the backdrop for films such as Gladiator II.
4. Italy: When it comes to combining shopping, art, food, superlative ruins, and beautiful countryside, few can match the delights of Italy. Whether it’s Rome, Florence, Milan or Naples, every corner of the country awaits discovery.
5. Egypt: Beyond the Pharaohs, pyramids and pulsating daily life in the likes of Cairo, Egypt remains a firm favourite. Adventurers eye the likes of Sharm El-Sheikh for diving and the charms of the Nile for cruising. If mystery is your wont, then Egypt is a great choice.
The rest of the top ten saw Portugal dropping from fourth to sixth, followed by Cyprus, Mexico, Mauritius and Croatia.
Google has also revealed the top trending cities and islands that were a main feature of 2024:
- Tenerife
- Benidorm
- Lanzarote, Spain
- Symi, Greece
- Fuerteventura, Spain
- Ibiza, Spain
- New York, USA
- Mallorca, Spain
- Sardinia, Italy
- Ikaria, Greece
Conclusion:
2024 was a real year of re-discovery for travellers as they finally broke free post-pandemic. Were these choices on your bucket list, or are they on your map for 2025? Whatever your choice, enjoy!
