New rules are being brought in September 2024 to change hand-luggage regulations for all travellers.

If you are travelling through or in the EU, be aware that the European Union will introduce new and standardized rules to clarify luggage rules and simplify air travel.

At the heart of the issue is that airlines can independently set their own rules regarding carry-on luggage, resulting in confusing policies for travellers that could mean potential costs and delays.

Luggage regs

Under the new regulations, consistent carry-on luggage rules will be brought in for all European airlines.

The rules include:

  • Uniform Maximum: An allowed maximum weight of 10 kilograms;
  • Carry-On Allowance: One piece of hand luggage and one small personal item, such as a handbag, backpack, or laptop bag, which must fit under the seat in front of you;
  • Maximum Dimensions: The main hand luggage must not exceed 55 x 40 x 20 cm, including handles and wheels. The personal item should not exceed 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

100ml liquids restriction

The European Commission has also detailed restrictions on liquids in hand luggage that will be reintroduced at European Union airports from September 1.

The temporary measures will require all liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols to be under 100ml and placed in a clear plastic bag before passing through airport security at any EU airport.

The decision surprised some airports that have sought to install new-generation C3 scanning equipment for hand luggage.

The changes are a broader push to make air travel more streamlined and efficient for passengers.

The restrictions were initially introduced in 2006 following a “liquid bomb plot” on a transatlantic flight.
