Lets Meet Vicki

Vicki loves to travel for the experience, a self proclaimed 'experience hunter' having spent 4 years full time travelling.  Now office bound she spends a great deal of time researching in order to get as much out of her travel as she can when she is there. She visits the must see’s, and then she’s out. Her goal?  To keep her country count above her age.

Her blog is written to inspire those who work full time proving that working full time does not have to hold you back from seeing the world. With research and careful thought you can travel and see a lot - without compromising your career and Vicki is on the road to being a qualified lawyer in more than one country. Her guiding philosophy is to never travel to the same place twice.

So far Vicki has had the opportunity to travel to Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, South America and the USA. At the time of publishing she has travelled to 34 countries.

Getting to Know Vicki

We asked Vicki some questions about his life as a traveller.

What is your favourite destination and why?

This is a really tough one for me and I always struggle to pick just one place whenever I am asked. I could tell you by continent? Vegas, USA (North America); Santaigo, Chile (South America); Barcelona, Spain (Europe); Luang Prabang, Laos (Asia); Melbourne (Oceania) and as for Africa.. I'll let you know after my trip in August later this year.

If you could only give one single travel tip that you think would be the most helpful what would it be?

Eat local food! Seek out the small restaurants with the local cooks, and try the street vendors on the side of the road. Really tasting local food can add so much to your travel experience.

What is your favourite travel related quote?

Travel as much as you can, as far as you can and for as long as you can. Life is not meant to be lived in one place.

What was the single most influential thing/moment that drove you to travel blogging?

I started blogging to have a place for me to store my travel history and to have a record of all the amazing things I have seen and done in this wonderful world that I can read over when I am old and my memory starts to fail me! It also acts as a really helpful cheat-sheet for my partner to use when he can't remember what we have done or where we have been! (I'll be honest, I may give him the occasional test and ask him to recite itineraries… but that’s because I want him to love everything about our travels as much as I do!)

What advice you would give someone wanting to become a travel blogger?

Do it for yourself, enjoy it - and stay true to yourself. If you're writing/blogging it's because you have thoughts and opinions and you don't need to change these to fit with the crowd or latest social media trend.

What do you do when/if not travelling?

Besides thinking about travel, writing about travel and dreaming about travel… Oh, you probably mean my real job…

I'm originally a law graduate by trade and after finishing my degree I went to work for a mid-tier firm in the north of England but quickly felt disillusioned with the whole system. Right at this time I got the opportunity to work at Walt Disney World in Florida for 6 months, and that kind-of started everything. From there I worked seasTravel Blogger: Vicki of Make Time to See the World - The Wise Travelleronal roles (in ski resorts) which allowed me a few months off each year to travel but when I arrived in Melbourne three years ago I decided to give law another shot and so swapped by backpack for an office cubicle.

I'm currently in a paralegal/legal assistant type role whilst I update my qualifications but if all my study goes to plan I will (*hopefully*) be admitted to practice as an Australian Lawyer in May/June of this year. I haven't decided if I will actually work as a lawyer - but it is something I said I was going to do as a child and I wanted to see it through to the end. Apart from all the study (plus the full time work and full time blog!) the toughest thing about being a desk-bound nomad is that I have to beg, borrow and purchase extra leave to get away enough to satisfy my wanderlust. But apart from winning the lottery (so I could do what I want when I want!) I wouldn't change it for the world.
