Boarding passes could become a thing of the past if Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport has anything to do with it.

As early as 2025, the airport plans to redefine the air travel experience by introducing its seamless "Smart Travel" system.

The project will eliminate the need for physical boarding passes and traditional travel documents by utilizing cutting-edge biometric authentication technologies at every checkpoint.

The initiative will be rolled out in three phases as part of a collaboration between Zayed International Airport and Next 50, a leader in AI-driven transportation solutions.

The goal is to integrate biometric authentication across all operational and security facets of the airport, simplifying the entire airport journey for passengers.

The "Smart Travel" system also aims to improve security and operational efficiency. It will allow for better airline performance, reduce the necessity for costly infrastructure enhancements, and help prevent fraud and forgery associated with identification documents.

By integrating artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies, the system will allow passengers to confirm their identities simply by presenting their faces. This is being supported by an extensive database maintained by the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.

The system has already been embraced by the UAE airline, Etihad Airways. Passengers travelling with Etihad can now enjoy a seamless journey from check-in through boarding, all facilitated by facial recognition—eliminating the need for boarding passes.

Zayed first installed biometric sensors in its new terminal, completed in November 2023.

The Airport's CEO, Elena Sorlini, said: "The initial rollout of cutting-edge biometrics at Zayed International Airport underscores our dedication to enhancing airport experiences through innovation and technology, ensuring efficiency, convenience, and superior service."

"Once fully implemented, Abu Dhabi will pioneer as the world's first airport with biometrics integrated at every stage, ensuring travellers enjoy a seamless, safe, and secure journey."

Customers will need to use at least three sensors before boarding their flight: One to register their likeness, one to check-in, and one to board the plane.

These new technologies mean it will take about seven seconds from the 25 at regular kiosks to go through the entire ticket and travel document verification process.
