September usually inspires travelers to plan and plot their way future trips, but there are still many diverse festivals to take in this month. Wise Traveller takes its members on a quick spin around the globe:
Oktoberfest, Germany
The world’s biggest beer festival in Germany, and probably globally, is celebrated in Munich. As much as the liquid flows during the 18-day late September festival, there are other cultural events to enjoy, all celebrating the Bavarian culture.
Ganesh Chaturthi, India
A Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom, prosperity, and remover of obstacles. The 10-day festival culminates with Visarjan, a symbolic washing as the Lord’s journey cleanses the misfortunes of devotees. Based on the lunar calendar, events can extend into late September.
Atlantic International Balloon Fiesta, Canada
Over in New Brunswick, the Atlantic International Balloon Fiesta now enters its 39th year. Participants get set for a weekend of ballooning and see the region from a bird’s eye perspective.
Global Webtoon Festival, South Korea
The Korean government plans to launch an international webtoon festival to promote the globally popular digital comics that originated in the nation about two decades ago. The inaugural Global Webtoon Festival will be held in Seongsu-dong, an emerging hotspot in northeastern Seoul, from September 26- 29. The festival will include a host of events, including of pop-up stores dedicated to cartoon works and companies.
Hermanus Whale Festival, South Africa
If you’re in the town of Hermanus in South Africa in late September, you could just be in for a treat. You might catch the annual Whale Watching Festival. September 27-29 will be a weekend to remember not just because of the fun and entertainment. It marks the annual migration of the southern right whales to the coastal waters of Hermanus. With an estimated 75,000 to 130,000 visitors each year, the festival is a must-see attraction for anyone who loves nature.
Harvest Moon Festival, South Korea
Another cultural gem from South Korea when Chuseok, the Harvest Moon Festival, one of Korea's most cherished holidays, is celebrated by locals and tourists with a feast of traditional Korean foods, such as rice cakes.
La Mercè, Spain
As one of Barcelona's largest street parties, celebrating the city's patron saint, the Virgin of Mercy, expect there to be thousands to descend on the city. The festival highlights Catalan culture with many events and concerts.
Regata Storica, Venice
Regata Storica is Venice's most important event, with a water pageant full of rowing race boats. The festival marks the Venetian maritime republic's history.
