With Spring slowly waking up the tourism season, it is also one of the best times of the year to soak up more cultural highlights. Here's a quick must-see list of festivals to consider:
Japan, Kanamara Matsura
The populace of Kanamara Matsura worships Kanamata, a legend granted special powers after a battle. Don't be surprised to see phallus-shaped objects erected across the town and in other parts of Japan in April, as they symbolize fertility and good fortune.
USA, Coachella
Rolling into California during April, Coachella has become one of the top music festivals to be seen at, given that it also has a loyal following of A-list stars and celebrities. It hosts many of the best Western musicians you can only ever hear on the radio or in a concert when they are on tour.
Spain, Sevilla Feria
Considered one of the best events to witness, the Sevilla Feria in Seville encompasses fire, dance, tapas, eating, and a whole spectrum of activities. The city has been witnessing it for many centuries. The traditional dates are April 14-20.
Thailand, Songkran
Songkran is celebrated between April 13 and 15 and celebrates the traditional Thai New Year. Festivities for Thais and tourists alike can be found in major centers such as Bangkok and Phuket. Songkran is rooted in Buddhist traditions but has become more of a celebration for Thais nationally.
Japan, Cherry Blossom
April is a prime time for Japan to welcome the cherry blossoms (sakura), which symbolize the new season and a new lease on life.
Australia, International Surfing Competition
Bell's Beach in the state of Victoria witnesses the longest-running surfing event across the globe in April. As one of Australia's most famous surfing beaches, the event continues to pull in thousands of tourists.
Austria, Snowbombing
Early to mid-April, sees the Snowbombing Festival in Tyrol. It hosts hundreds of international music artists from all genres. But pack your winter woollies, as it's likely to be chilly this time of year.
New Zealand, Warbirds over Wānaka
Warbirds over Wānaka is an international airshow that will return in 2024 after a six-year hiatus. Aeroplanes dating from the 1940s will once again fill the skies at the airshow, which began in 1988. The aircraft line-up includes a WWII Mosquito, F-16 Fighting Falcons, and the American Eagles Jet Display Team.
