Geneva Overview

Geneva City Guide - The Wise Traveller

As one of the world’s most desirable cities, Geneva owes much to the influence of its proximity to France. Lake Geneva and the Alps fuse to present the traveller with a stunning panorama. Nearly 200,000 inhabit the metro area of the city, the majority Swiss.

Geneva has an industrial and financial economy, but it is the natural beauty of the area that stays long in the mind. With clean air and picturesque landscapes, the city somehow manages to live in harmony with mother-nature. Natural mineral water springs from the mountains, the streets are clean, and the atmosphere diplomatic.

Geneva is a city of beauty, culture, and business, and one of the most desirable places in the world in which to live. This all comes at a price, though: it is also one of the most costly cities, too.

Top 5 Places To Eat

Best Eating In Geneva - The Wise Traveller

The Swiss do chocolate to perfection. What is not often considered is their wider culinary expertise. Here we look at five of the best restaurants for business people to eat.

Café des Banques

Gatronomic Views In Prague - The Wise Traveller

Located in the heart of Geneva’s financial market, this restaurant offers great food, wine and often hosts thematic evenings. You can also reserve a private room to hold business lunches or birthday meals for parties up to 25 people. The selection of wine offered is French, Swiss, or Italian.

Les Armures

Why not visit this restaurant to taste the Swiss specialities they have on offer, like raclette or fondue? They also offer French cuisine if you prefer. With a Swiss wine list and local produce served gourmet style, this is a great place to enjoy a quiet evening and quality dinner.

Relais De L’entrecote

One of the most popular places to eat, you may find a queue to get a table – which is rare in Geneva. Best get there early, as reservations are not allowed. The grilled steak strips drenched in house sauce is one of this restaurant’s most popular dishes.

Le Jardin

A modern stylish restaurant which has an exceptional wine list and a vast array of dishes, with meat dishes cooked to your liking. Sunday brunch is particularly special, and entertainment evenings are rounded off by fireworks on the terrace.

Café des Bains

This is an old bistro style restaurant, re-opened in 2000 with the addition of a bar which has encouraged a more contemporary atmosphere though without losing its warm and friendly feel. With free Wi-Fi in the bar area, you can enjoy a snack or bar meal while working through if you wish. Food is seasonal.

Geneva City After Hours

Long Haul Flight Survival - The Wise Traveller

Geneva is a city which boasts entertainment from pubs and clubs through to the height of culture. Suited businessmen rub shoulders with students, though the convivial atmosphere makes for a city that lacks edge.

Geneva has a long theatrical history – going all the way back to Voltaire in the mid-18th century, and there is an avant-garde population that delights in the modern dance clubs. Trendsetters frequent clubs such as Gold & Platinum after loosening up at FloorTwo, while the more laid back may beat a path for La Clemence – a tiny bar with a big reputation.

For soul and jazz lovers Au Chat Noir beckons, while performance artists can be found at L’Usine. Ballet and opera are performed regularly at the Grand Theatre.

The Swiss may be seen as a staid bunch, but the comedy at the Comedie de Geneve is top notch.

Business Etiquette

Definitive Guide To Travel Etiquette - The Wise Traveller

In Geneva, it is vital that you do not mix business with pleasure. As using first names has not yet reached Switzerland when conducting business conversations, it is important to use surnames; even outside of the office setting. Also be sure to include Monsieur/ Madame unless invited to do otherwise. It is very important to use the formal “vous” instead of “tu”. Also be patient, as businessmen like to weigh up all sides of the issue before making any decision and pushing for an answer will most likely lead to the answer you do not wish to hear.

Within offices, it is important to greet everyone with either a handshake, polite verbal greeting or just a gesture of acknowledgement.

Geneva is on the whole easily conquered on foot, however if needed there are various other ways to traverse this city.

Driving is not recommended within the city due to the expensive and limited parking, but there are several public transport services. These include trains, bicycles, lake boats, and local buses as well as the intercity bus. Public transport tends to run frequently and covers almost every square metre of the city. Rental bicycles are free to use with just a deposit required behind Gare Cornavin at Quai du Mont-Blanc. Please note that there are not many bike paths and the city suffers with many steep hills.

Since Switzerland joined Europe’s passport free Schengen area in 2009, crime statistics have risen. The police in Geneva, however, have put in place more police patrols and have promoted a PR campaign with the aim of reducing the crime rate and bring the city back to one of the top ten cities in the world, as it was in 2011.

In Geneva, there is a smoking ban in all work places as well as bars and restaurants.
